BEAUTIFUL NATURE
ASPENSTORP NATURE RESERVE
Experience the Aspenstorp nature reserve, located in the northern part of the mine area, offering excellent opportunities to study both flora and historic mines – at the same time! The trail through Aspenstorp is approximately 1.5 kilometres long.
Along the way there are several lovely spots where you can lay out the snacks you brought with you. If nature is your main interest, you can, in certain seasons, discover rare mosses, flowers and fungi that thrive in the lime-rich soil.

OUTDOOR LIFE AND NATURE
MERGÖLEN NATURE RESERVE
Experience trails that take you through coniferous forests and across open rocky ground. History is ever-present, perhaps most notably through the mine holes and small shafts scattered throughout the area.
The forest in Mergölen has mainly grown up after operations at Sala Silver Mine were scaled down during the 19th century. The natural values found in Mergölen today are linked to the ageing forest and the large amount of the rock dolomite in the soil. Dolomite is a rock closely related to limestone. This means that many different plants that like lime-rich soil thrive here, such as pasqueflower, cowslip and various orchids.
In autumn there is plenty of edible mushrooms here, but also many rare species, such as copper spike and smooth hedgehog. In some places the forest opens up to reveal limestone pavements where drought-tolerant plants thrive. On the rock slabs, for example, wild thyme, pussytoes and black spleenwort grow. In May and June you can keep an eye out for Mergölen’s speciality, saxifrage. You will find it most easily on limestone slabs that are free from other vegetation.

LIMESTONE QUARRY
FINNTORPSBROTTET
In Sala there are a few water-filled limestone quarries that are beautiful places to visit. One of these is Finntorpsbrottet, located on the outskirts of Sala Silver Mine’s south-western area.
The quarry is easily reached via a walk of about 20 minutes, or by car in 5 minutes, from the mine area. The MTB trail Knektleden also passes the quarry. It is primarily a beautiful place to visit, but it is also possible to swim in the quarry.
